Description | There’s a long tradition of attaining – paddling upriver – on the Potomac. The race will involve navigating a vessel (kayak; canoe; SUP) upriver from Anglers Beach. Mass start. |
Course | The race will start at Anglers Beach. Typically, racers navigate up the main flow of the river and through Mather Gorge. Example finish lines include: (a) in the river-left eddy (“Rocky Cove”) below Rocky Island; (b) at S-Turn near the Fishladder outflow; (c) Fisherman’s Eddy; (d) return to Anglers Beach. River levels and other conditions may dictate alternative courses, which will be communicated to the community in advance of each event. |
Option 1, if below 4.5′: – Start at Anglers Beach – Finish at Rocky Cove (the large cove on river left below Rocky Island, where the Back Channel flows into the main river)
Option 2, if above 4.5′: – Start at Anglers Beach – Paddle downriver and around Hermit Island (next island below Offutt Island) – Return upriver through the opposite channel (example: if you paddled down river-left, you must paddle up river-right) – Finish back at Anglers Beach
